Swan Lifespan Chart
My grandmother kept a postcard of the swans at Abbotsbury on her fridge for years. When I finally visited that swannery in Dorset, a warden mentioned that some of the mute swans nesting there were older than the postcard. That surprised me. I had filed swans under decoration, not endurance.
Swans live longer than most people expect. A mute swan can pass forty years. The catch is that the average is far lower, because most cygnets never see their first birthday. Survive that early gauntlet, and a swan can outlast a family dog several times over.
There is also more confusion in swan names than in almost any bird group. The tundra swan, Bewick’s swan, and whistling swan are not three species. They are one species and its two subspecies.
The swan lifespan chart below sorts every swan and its main subspecies by wild, captive, and record years, then explains the naming, the biology, and what cuts a swan’s life short.

Swan Lifespan Chart: Every Swan
Each row shows a realistic adult lifespan in the wild, a captive figure, and the longest age on record. Wild ranges reflect birds that survive past their first year. The true count is six swan species, with two of the rows below being subspecies of the tundra swan and one, the coscoroba, not a true swan at all.
| Type | Scientific Name | Wild Lifespan | Captive Lifespan | Max Recorded | Notes |
| Mute swan | Cygnus olor | 10–20 yrs | 25–30 yrs | ~40 yrs | True swan; common in Europe |
| Whooper swan | Cygnus cygnus | 10–20 yrs | 25–35 yrs | ~30 yrs | True swan; large migratory |
| Trumpeter swan | Cygnus buccinator | 12–24 yrs | 30–33 yrs | ~33 yrs | Largest swan species |
| Tundra swan | Cygnus columbianus | 10–20 yrs | 20–30 yrs | ~24 yrs | True swan; Arctic breeder |
| Bewick’s swan | Cygnus columbianus bewickii | 9–20 yrs | 20–30 yrs | ~24 yrs | Eurasian subspecies of tundra swan |
| Whistling swan | Cygnus columbianus columbianus | 10–20 yrs | 20–30 yrs | ~24 yrs | North American tundra swan (nominate) |
| Black swan | Cygnus atratus | 10–20 yrs | 20–30 yrs | ~30 yrs | True swan; native to Australia |
| Black-necked swan | Cygnus melancoryphus | 10–20 yrs | 20–30 yrs | ~30 yrs | True swan; South America |
| Coscoroba swan | Coscoroba coscoroba | 15–20 yrs | 20–35 yrs | ~35 yrs | Not a true swan; separate genus |
The pattern is clear. The big northern swans live longest, with the mute and trumpeter reaching their 30s and 40s in good conditions. The smaller tundra swans and their subspecies top out in the mid 20s. Most swan species are listed as Least Concern, though a few populations face real pressure.
Northern Hemisphere Swan Lifespans
These four are the classic swans of Europe, Asia, and North America. They are large, they pair for life, and they can live for decades once they reach adulthood. The trumpeter swan is the heavyweight, the largest waterfowl in North America at over 25 pounds.
| Swan | Scientific Name | Wild Lifespan | Max Recorded |
| Mute swan | Cygnus olor | 10–20 yrs | ~40 yrs |
| Whooper swan | Cygnus cygnus | 10–20 yrs | ~30 yrs |
| Trumpeter swan | Cygnus buccinator | 12–24 yrs | ~33 yrs |
| Tundra swan | Cygnus columbianus | 10–20 yrs | ~24 yrs |
The oldest swan on record is a mute swan ringed in Germany in 1970 and found in Denmark in 2009, more than 40 years later. Trumpeter swans nearly went extinct in the early 1900s and have recovered well, which is why their lifespan data improved as banding programs grew. Swans sit in the same family as ducks and geese, so the goose identification chart and the duck identification chart cover their closest relatives.
Tundra Swan and Its Two Subspecies
Here is where the names tangle. The tundra swan is a single species, Cygnus columbianus, with two subspecies. The North American form is the whistling swan, and the Eurasian form is Bewick’s swan. So when a chart lists tundra, whistling, and Bewick’s as three rows, it is really showing one species twice over.
| Swan | Scientific Name | Wild Lifespan | Max Recorded |
| Tundra swan (species) | Cygnus columbianus | 10–20 yrs | ~24 yrs |
| Whistling swan (N. America) | C. c. columbianus | 10–20 yrs | ~24 yrs |
| Bewick’s swan (Eurasia) | C. c. bewickii | 9–20 yrs | ~24 yrs |
Their lifespans are effectively the same, since they are the same animal split by geography. Some authorities do propose splitting them into two full species, but that is not yet settled.
The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust has tracked individual Bewick’s swans at Slimbridge for decades, recognizing each bird by its unique bill pattern.
Southern Hemisphere Swans
The southern swans break the all-white mold. The black swan of Australia and the black-necked swan of South America are true swans. The coscoroba is the odd one out, smaller and goose-like, and not a true swan despite the name.
| Swan | Scientific Name | Wild Lifespan | Max Recorded |
| Black swan | Cygnus atratus | 10–20 yrs | ~30 yrs |
| Black-necked swan | Cygnus melancoryphus | 10–20 yrs | ~30 yrs |
| Coscoroba swan | Coscoroba coscoroba | 15–20 yrs | ~35 yrs |
The coscoroba sits in its own genus and looks more like a large duck than a swan. It is included here because people search for it as a swan, but taxonomists keep it separate. The black swan, by contrast, is a genuine Cygnus and a common sight on ornamental lakes worldwide.
Why Swan Averages Look So Low
A mute swan can reach 40, yet many sources list its average at 10 to 12 years. Both numbers are correct, and the gap explains a lot about swans.
Cygnet mortality is brutal. Many never survive their first winter, lost to cold, starvation, predators, and snapping turtles in some regions. Those early deaths drag the average down hard. A swan that reaches adulthood faces far better odds and can live for decades.
This is why the chart lists adult ranges rather than raw averages. If you see a swan on a lake that already looks full-grown, its remaining life expectancy is far higher than the headline average suggests.
What Affects How Long a Swan Lives
Several pressures decide whether a swan reaches old age. Most are tied to humans and habitat.
| Factor | Effect on Lifespan |
| First-year survival | Cygnets face heavy losses; surviving the first winter is the biggest hurdle |
| Lead poisoning | Swallowed lead shot and fishing weights have long been a major killer, now reduced by bans |
| Power lines and collisions | Large bodies make swans prone to fatal strikes during flight |
| Habitat and food | Clean wetlands with steady food support long adult lives |
| Captive care | Refuges and parks remove predators and provide food, so swans often reach record ages |
Most swans are listed as Least Concern by the IUCN Red List, but local populations can still be fragile. For waterbirds under real threat, the endangered birds chart covers species in steeper decline.
FAQs
How long do swans live on average?
Wild swans average 10 to 12 years, weighed down by high cygnet mortality. Adults that survive their first years often live 20 years or more, and some pass 30 or 40.
Which swan lives the longest?
The mute swan holds the record. One ringed bird lived more than 40 years. Trumpeter swans reach about 33 in captivity, the next longest documented.
How many species of swan are there?
There are six living true swan species: mute, whooper, trumpeter, tundra, black, and black-necked. Bewick’s and whistling swans are subspecies of the tundra swan, and the coscoroba is not a true swan.
Are Bewick’s swan and tundra swan the same?
Yes, Bewick’s swan is the Eurasian subspecies of the tundra swan. The North American form is the whistling swan. Some scientists argue for splitting them, but they are currently one species.
Do swans live longer in captivity?
Often, yes. Park and refuge swans avoid predators, lead poisoning, and food shortages, so they can reach 30 to 40 years. Wild swans rarely get that protection.
Why do so many cygnets die young?
Cygnets face cold, starvation, and predators, and many do not survive their first winter. This high early loss is why swan averages look low even though adults live for decades.
How does a swan’s lifespan compare to other animals?
Swans are long-lived for birds, rivaling many parrots. For other longevity tables, see the sturgeon lifespan chart for a fish that can pass 100 years, the cat lifespan chart for felines by age, and the broader types of birds guide for more on swan relatives.
