Lion Lifespan Chart in Captivity and Wild
On a game drive a few years back, our guide pointed at a big male lion resting in the shade. He looked ancient to me, mane gone dark and ragged. The guide put his age at eleven. I was surprised it was so low. Then he said most males never see eleven.
That stayed with me. A lion rules the savanna, and still a wild male is lucky to reach twelve. Females do better, often by four or five years. Cubs barely survive at all, with about half gone before they turn two.
The numbers swing hard depending on sex, on life stage, and on whether the animal lives free or in a zoo. A wild male and a sanctuary female can sit two decades apart. So I pulled it all into one lion lifespan chart, with scientific names and conservation status attached.
Below is that chart, plus the reasons a male’s crown is so short, why a lioness usually outlives him, and how a safe enclosure can stretch a lion past twenty.

Lion Lifespan Chart
Seven lion types, from the well-protected Asiatic lion to the Barbary lion that no longer roams wild. Figures are typical ranges. Since 2017 only two subspecies are recognized, so the regional names below sit inside Panthera leo leo or melanochaita.
| Lion Type / Population | Subspecies (current) | IUCN Status | Wild | Captivity |
| African lion (overall) | P. leo leo / melanochaita | Vulnerable | 10-14 yrs | 16-20 yrs |
| Transvaal (Kruger) lion | P. leo melanochaita | Vulnerable | 10-14 yrs | 16-20 yrs |
| Southwest African lion | P. leo melanochaita | Vulnerable | 10-14 yrs | 16-20 yrs |
| Congo (Central African) lion | P. leo leo | Endangered | 10-14 yrs | 16-20 yrs |
| West African lion | P. leo leo | Critically Endangered | 10-14 yrs | 15-18 yrs |
| Asiatic lion | P. leo leo | Endangered | 12-16 yrs | 18-20 yrs |
| Barbary (Atlas) lion | P. leo leo | Extinct in Wild | None left | 16-20 yrs |
Lifespan barely changes across these populations. What changes is the risk. The West African lion is critically endangered with around 400 left, while southern populations in fenced reserves are far more stable.
Why Male Lions Die Younger Than Females
This is the biggest split in the whole chart. A wild lioness outlives a wild male by four years or more. The reason is the job. Males defend territory and fight rivals. A losing male is evicted, and an evicted male rarely recovers.
| Measure | Male | Female | Why |
| Wild lifespan | 8-12 yrs | 12-16 yrs | Males fight; females stay in the pride |
| Captive lifespan | 14-18 yrs | 16-20 yrs | Both gain years, lionesses still edge ahead |
| Main risk | Pride takeovers | Hunting injury | Different roles, different dangers |
| Oldest wild record | ~19 (Loonkito) | ~19 (Mathata) | Both Kenyan lions, far past the norm |
Females hunt together and stay in the pride they were born into. That stability buys them time. Like the tigers of Asia, lions are built for power, not for a long quiet life.
A Lion’s Life Stages, From Cub to King
Most lions never reach the chart’s headline numbers. Roughly half of all cubs die in the first two years. The survivors face a gauntlet that gets harder before it gets easier.
| Life Stage | Survival | What Happens |
| Cubs (0-2 yrs) | ~50% die | Disease, starvation, and males killing cubs after a takeover |
| Subadults (2-4 yrs) | Most leave | Young males get pushed out of the pride to roam |
| Nomadic males (no pride) | 4-8 yrs | The hardest life, no territory, constant danger |
| Pride males (dominant) | 6-10 yrs | A few good years on top, then ousted by younger rivals |
| Pride females | 12-16 yrs | Stay with the pride for life and hunt as a team |
The nomad years are the killer. A young male with no pride roams open country, dodging stronger lions and angry buffalo herds. If he wins a pride, he gets a few good years. Then a younger male arrives and the cycle repeats.
How Long Do Lions Live in Captivity?
A zoo or sanctuary lion skips the worst dangers. No takeovers, no starvation, no poachers. Most reach 16 to 20 years, and a few push well past that.
| Setting | Typical Lifespan |
| Zoo (managed population) | 16-20 years, rare individuals reach the mid-20s |
| Sanctuary / rescue | 15-20 years, often shorter for ex-circus or injured lions |
The records are striking. Zenda at the Philadelphia Zoo lived to about 25. Arjun, at an Indian rescue center, reached roughly 26. A rescued circus lioness named Saltena made it to 27. None of that happens in the wild, where 15 is already old age.
What Decides How Long a Lion Lives
Five things move the number more than anything else. Sex and pride status do most of the work.
| Factor | Effect on Lifespan |
| Sex | Males die younger from fights and eviction from the pride |
| Pride status | Lions in a pride outlive lone nomads by years |
| Prey and drought | Scarce food and dry seasons cut wild lives short |
| Humans | Trophy hunting, poaching, and conflict kill many before old age |
| Captivity | Steady food and vet care add years, sometimes into the mid-20s |
Compared with the long-lived giants they share the plains with, like elephants, lions live fast. A bull elephant can outlast five generations of lions on the same patch of grass.
FAQs
How long do lions live in the wild?
Wild lions live about 10 to 14 years on average. Males usually reach 8 to 12 years, while females often live 12 to 16.
How long do lions live in captivity?
Most captive lions live 16 to 20 years. With steady food and veterinary care, a few have reached their mid-20s.
Why do male lions die younger than females?
Males fight for territory and get evicted from prides by younger rivals. An ousted male roams alone and rarely survives long. Females stay in the pride and hunt as a team.
Which lion lives the longest?
Asiatic lions in India’s protected Gir Forest often reach 12 to 16 years in the wild, a little longer than most African populations. In captivity, individual lions of any type can pass 20 years.
Are Barbary lions extinct?
The Barbary lion has been extinct in the wild since the 1960s. Fewer than 200 captive descendants survive in zoos, and they can still live 16 to 20 years.
How does a lion’s lifespan compare to other big animals?
It is short for an apex predator. Where a giraffe or elephant can live for decades, a wild lion rarely passes 15. For more big-cat data, see the types of wild cats guide and the full Animals Chart hub.
